Weekly Playlist 10/11
Every Friday, I share the highlights of what I’ve been listening to over the course of the week, from old favorites to new discoveries.
New Order’s iconic Power, Corruption & Lies is a fantastic album, to put it mildly, and it kicks off wonderfully — much like this week’s playlist — with “Age of Consent,” a song that demonstrates the group’s strength of mixing synthesizers and guitars for a new-wave sound with a little bit of attitude. While it’s not as upbeat and dancey as, say, “Bizarre Love Triangle,” it has a fun groove that never gets old.
Nicki Minaj can do upbeat and catchy, too — “Starships” in particular — but “Roman Holiday” is interesting for its mix of sounds. And Sublime, whose self-titled is known for the hits “What I Got” and “Santeria,” has fun with ska grooves on “Wrong Way.”
I first heard Steve Earle’s “The Galway Girl” when it was featured in the movie PS I Love You, and I was thrilled to rediscover it by chance this week. The lyrics are the semi-autobiographical telling of meeting a black-haired, blue-eyed woman, with a fun, upbeat Irish feel. We get more guitar-heavy with The Gaslight Anthem’s “45,” then go grunge when we end with Pearl Jam’s “Daughter,” one of their best.
As a bonus this week, as we gear up for Halloween, enjoy this Punk Rock Halloween compilation!
